They may not be gems, but there's plenty of sedimental value!

While Momma will never turn down an occasion to blast some Beatles, Pink Floyd, or even The Doors, sadly this holiday refers to a much different kind of rock...

January 7th: Old Rock Day

Today is the day geologists don't take for granite; Rock nerds unite to show their love for all things fossilized and stony.

It was a balmy 14℉ outside today so spending much time out in their natural habitat was out of the question. My eager little pebble person was up for a quick mission to gather some rocks in his trusty Thomas basket though.

Once back in the warmth, Momma wanted to make sure we started with a clean slate, so I washed all the frozen mud off what we collected. What are we doing with these rocks? Middle's favorite activity of coarse, painting!

I gave Middle the full rainbow of colors and set him loose.

Typical of his normal painting style, he decided to swirl his colors again.

It's really kind of igneous, since it creates a marbling effect. Our rocks turned out pretty coal looking in the end. I haven't decided how we're going to display them just yet, but when we do, I'll update with some pictures, of quartz.

Well, Momma's running low on rock puns, but I think I did a solid job. But not to quarry, we'll be back again tomorrow with a new holiday!
