The Apple Never Falls Far from the Tree
Momma has always liked to paint and Middle seems to be following suit.
January 6th: National Apple Tree Day
A holiday once created to celebrate a tree passing the two century mark, now celebrates apple cultivation across the country. It's not the best season to be planting our own little apple tree, so Middle and I decided to paint one...with apples! It's apple inception!
Momma made a quick outline of our future masterpiece.
No tree is complete without a cute little critter hanging about, right?
Next, supply prep. For this project, we opted to ditch the brushes and use the apples themselves. I cut a large apple in half and removed all the seeds. I wasn't sure how Middle would handle the apple so I gave him two options, the plain apple and one with a fork in it for a makeshift handle.
We started with the plain apple and a little bit of red paint. Middle dipped the apple in, cut side down and stamped it onto the tree. Our apple must not have been perfectly flat because we got a good outline, but not a lot of print from the middle.
He was doing well with the plain apple, but I decided to let him try with the fork next. This didn't go as well because of the angle of the fork. It made it tougher for him to figure out how to get the apple flat.
So we scraped the fork and went back to the plain apple. We used red, green, and yellow paints to fill our tree up with "apples." When he was finished, it looked a little more like a fall tree, but he was happy with his work.
Next we decided to get the brush back out and fill in some of the white space on our tree. A little green for the grass, blue for the sky, and brown for the tree trunk and we have a beautiful masterpiece to celebrate our day.
This was by far our messiest crafty day. Middle's art smock looks like the real deal now.
Thankfully, our faithful Dollar Tree table cloth protected all the important stuff again like the floor and carpet. Although, that cloth is looking kinda rough these days and starting to get a few holes, so it might be time to think about getting a replacement....after all, our year is just getting started!
