January 11: National Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day
This holiday originated in 2011 when author Anita Silvey’s “Children’s Book-a-Day Almanac” marked the day. "On that date’s page in her Almanac, she notes that it’s celebrated by people that live in an ice and snowless place. Silvey also recommends reading “Splish, Splash” by Sarah Weeks, “The Problem with Puddles” by Kate Feiffer, and “Splash” by Ann Jonas."
It's pretty cold outside today so splashing in puddles outdoors didn't seem fun at all. But we had to celebrate, so we brought the fun inside. Using a shallow plastic bin, some beach towels, and a pitcher of water, we made indoor puddles!
Middle was a little hesitant at first and wanted to hold mom's hand.
But once he realized this was his chance to splash all the water out and on me without Momma getting upset, he was totally on board.
Middle wanted to do more jumping than stomping. The tub was a little slick with the addition of water so you can guess how that worked out...
I promise he was ok, even refused to stop jumping after he stood back up. I held his hands for a little while longer to help steady him through all the jumping and sliding. He was disappointed when we had to stop playing for the night, but a bowl of ice cream and his favorite train video and he forgot all about it. I might have to save this activity up for another cold day, but I'll definitely be adding some kind of grippy material in the tub.
