Corn but not Forgotten

We're a day late, but what's popping around here?

January 19: National Popcorn Day

Fun fact: the first National Popcorn Day was actually on January 31, 1988, which was Super Bowl Sunday. It wasn't until 2003 when a newspaper in Brownfield, Texas stated the date was January 19th. Somehow it stuck and here we are!

Momma was born and grew up in the city which holds the world's largest popcorn festival every year in September: Marion, Ohio. Marion is one of the top growers of popcorn in the United States and the company Wyandot, Inc., located in the city, is one of the top exporters of popcorn in the world. The festival began in 1981, so I've literally been celebrating popcorn every year of my life. We try to make the trip back every year and Middle has already been to two festivals himself (it was cancelled in 2020).

2019 (he's in the carrier under that blanket)

2021 Waiting on the parade to start!

While we have all this popcorn fun, Middle's never actually eaten any! So today, he got to make his first bag and then try it out.

He got excited when he started hearing the popping noises from the bag.

Don't let that face fool you, he was a popcorn eating machine after that bite.

We originally popped the bag as a supply for our craft for the day, so I had to remind Middle that he couldn't eat it all...
We decided to try a popcorn rainbow with milk paint.

Using glue to make six lines, you press the popcorn onto the paper, then use a paintbrush to put the milk paint onto the kernels. I'm not totally sure if we just had some old glue or what, but our popcorn was not sticking to the paper. I decided to just let the popcorn fall where it may and Middle painted as he pleased.

The downfall of this particular craft is that it's temporary. Once the milk soaks into the corn, it slowly begins to dissolve it. So it's pretty for a moment, then it's sludge. But Middle didn't seem to mind as he walked away happily munching on what was left in the bowl.
